The NFL is pledging $100 million to player safety as concerns about concussions shadow the game. Pedro Martinez Jersey Large .NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote a letter announcing the funding and outlining a new initiative called Play Safe, Play Smart on the programs website.Goodell wrote that the goal of the initiative is to drive progress in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of head injuries, enhance medical protocols and further improve the way the game is taught and played by all who love it.The NFL has a troubled history around the topic of brain research and concussions. For nearly two decades, the league ran a series of scientific experiments, formed its own research arm and published 16 papers about football and head injuries. The central conclusion -- that NFL players dont get brain damage -- led to public criticism, Congressional hearings and, in 2009, the abandonment of the project.More recently, in May, congressional investigators concluded that at least a half-dozen top NFL health officials waged an improper, behind-the-scenes campaign last year to influence a major U.S. government research study on football and brain disease. The 91-page congressional report described how the NFL pressured the National Institutes of Health to strip a $16 million project from a prominent Boston University researcher and tried to redirect the money to members of the leagues committee on brain injuries. The study was to have been funded out of a $30 million unrestricted gift the NFL gave the NIH in 2012.After the NIH rebuffed the NFLs campaign to remove Robert Stern, an expert in neurodegenerative disease who has criticized the league, the NFL backed out of a signed agreement to pay for the study, the report shows. Taxpayers ended up bearing the cost instead. The NFLs actions violated policies that prohibit private donors from interfering in the NIH peer-review process, the report concludes, and were part of a long-standing pattern of attempts by the league to shape concussion research for its own purposes. In the letter posted Wednesday, the commissioner said that the league can and will do better in this area and acknowledged that some might think the leagues motives are not pure.We know there is skepticism about our work in this area, he wrote. Thats why both the process and the results of our work will be shared with the medical community and the public at large. The program will have four pillars, according to the website: protecting players, advanced technology, medical research and sharing progress. The league will take a hard look at any aspect of the rules that can make the game safer for our players, Goodell wrote. But the letter also says that $60 million of the total funding will go toward exploring technological solutions to player safety. That could include new helmets.Another of our goals is to explore the concept of position-specific helmets, Goodell wrote. After all, we know from tracking game and injury data that linemen experience different impacts than a wide receiver or a defensive back. Yet their protective equipment is the same.Goodell wrote that more than $40 million will be allotted to medical research.?The goal is to pursue scientific research to examine the long-term effects of concussion, the incidence and prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and what can be done to improve long-term player health, Goodell wrote. As professional athletes question whether they would allow their own kids to play football, Goodell wrote that the new program plans to share information with sports families. Our goal will be to equip parents with the best available information to make decisions about their childrens participation in football and other contact sports, he wrote, adding that the league will expand its athletic trainer program.Talk of head injuries has become a major topic in the NFL. The NFL and NFLPA said that they will look into hits that league MVP Cam Newton took this weekend to see if correct protocols were followed.?All of the talk takes leads to the question of whether the risk of playing football is worth the reward. Goodell thinks it is.Long ago, before I was NFL Commissioner, I was a high school football player, he wrote. I played safety for the Bronxville High School Broncos. Those were among the happiest days of my life. The values I gained from that experience -- grit, commitment to team, hard work and how to conduct oneself in both victory and defeat -- are values Ive applied throughout my adult life. Bobby Doerr Jersey Large . Following a lopsided 5-2 loss against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, Paul MacLean told reporters that "theres a lack of focus, theres a lack of leadership and theres a lack of preparation" with his struggling team. That came on the heels of Bryan Murray taking the unusual step of going into the locker room at the Prudential Center and addressing the players himself. Wholesale Custom Red Sox Shirts . The lawyers filed a 33-page amended complaint Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, expanding on the suit originally filed Oct. 3 in New York Supreme Court. Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz last week refused to compel Selig to testify in the grievance, and Rodriguez then walked out of the hearing without testifying. http://www.customredsoxjersey.com/ . -- Jimmy Walkers first PGA Tour trophy came with a special gift tucked inside. Its not every day that a 13-year-old inner-city girl becomes an overnight celebrity. But it was at this time of year, back in 2014, when Mone Davis did exactly that.Playing for Philadelphias Taney Youth Baseball Association at the Little League World Series, Davis became the first girl to pitch her team to a Williamsport win. Today, her name still has the weight of some of the biggest stars in American sports. Now, though, her focus has shifted from the diamond to the hardwood.Davis, 15, is heading into her sophomore year of high school at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. She dreams of a career in the WNBA, and she knows the journey begins with the process of college recruitment. Thats why Davis has made the decision to forgo high school basketball this season -- after representing her school as an eighth-grader and a freshman -- and exclusively play AAU with the Philly Triple Threat team, where she can go head-to-head with the best talent in the nation.I made the decision because it was time to start getting out there in front of college coaches and showing my improvement over the next two years, Davis said. She isnt resting on her fame to get her to the next level. Davis wants to go against the best competition around. When she speaks about the challenges of the AAU circuit, the fierceness she showed on the mound in Williamsport pours out.Theres a lot of girls that are really good at my age and older, she said. I just wanna go out there and show them you can be ranked, but you have to prove on the court why youre ranked. And well just have a battle, just go right at it. ... And well see who wins at the end. While Davis is a natural competitor, she also is a pioneer for young women in sports. But she isnt naive of the challenges still ahead. She is fully aware that the women in her dream league arent appreciated like their counterparts in the NBA. Still, she is optimistic.Riding high after watching the U.S. womens basketball team cruise to gold in Rio, Davis underscored her belief in gender equality. No matter what level it is, everything [between men and women] should be treated the same, she said while the Olympics were inn full swing. Custom Roger Clemens Jersey. The [USA] womens team is just blowing out girls. The mens team -- Im not trying to throw shade or anything -- just won by like three points.Davis is hopeful that what she did in Williamsport, and what she continues to do athletically, is a part of a larger movement to recognize and respect women in sports. All sports. This is a perfect time because of what the U.S. gymnastics team just did, she said. It just boosted a lot for female power. Now people can see -- give girls a chance, and well show you why we should have some more TV coverage. A lot of women are just proving it right now. When this former Taney Dragon opens up about some of the most pressing topics of our time, she does it with a seasoned mind that many professional athletes dont have. Its partially why she was the perfect person to seize the spotlight when it came her way in 2014.Davis appeared on SportsCenter and then went on a press tour usually reserved for Hollywood A-listers and Super Bowl MVPs. She has met President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, basketball star Stephen Curry, football star Russell Wilson, comedian Kevin Hart, Olympian Allyson Felix, icon Billie Jean King and countless other celebrities. When Davis looks back at that time, she knows she was doing gigantic things athletically, but also showing an uncanny ability to maintain a levelheaded approach.I act older than what I was, in a good way, she said. I didnt know that I was that mature at the age of 13.Davis credits her family and friends for helping her maintain that maturity and keeping her grounded and centered.Today, Mone Davis still plays baseball at the place her sports journey started, the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, in South Philadelphia.Shes aware that softball will return to the Olympics in 2020. But shes not tempted.Shes lacing up her sneakers, not her cleats; dreaming of assists, not strikeouts. Hoping one day she can wear the Team USA basketball jersey?while tipping her cap to female athletes everywhere. ' ' '
