Plot Overview
The story follows Harry Holt, who returns to the African jungle with his partner Martin Arlington to find the legendary Elephant Burial Ground and its hoard of ivory. Holt also hopes to convince his former girlfriend, Jane, to leave Tarzan and return to civilization. While Jane is briefly tempted by the luxuries they bring, she remains committed to Tarzan. The expedition eventually unleashes havoc, forcing Tarzan to defend his home and Jane from both greedy hunters and hostile tribes.
Historical Significance
Pre-Code Era: Released just before the strict enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code, the film is famous for its “nude” underwater swimming sequence featuring a body double (Josephine McKim) for O’Sullivan.
Preservation: In 2003, the U.S. Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
